Murther and Walking Spirits may be perceived, to an extent, as another supernatural tale, a form which Davies revisited in High Spirits (1982). Immediately in the inaugural phrase of the narrative, "Gil" Gilmartin, the protagonist and protagonist-narrator, is slain. Subsequently, he participates in an odd cinematic event, wherein he views "flicks" which trace the whereabouts of his predecessor generations. These moving pictures, copiously dealing with items and contemporaries closer to the present, bring the novel to its closure in modern times.
